How to setup WireGuard on FRITZ!Box

This guide was created by a community member and reviewed by us. Firmware and router interfaces may change over time, so some steps may differ depending on your device or version.

Step 1.

1.1 Open WireGuard generator page.
1.2. In the left side menu, select the GENERATORS -> WIREGUARD section.
1.3. In the Select Country drop-down list, select the location you need (for example, Norway, Bondefjord).
1.4. In the Select Key block, select the Generate New Key item.
1.5. Click the Download button. The configuration file (for example, xeovo-no.conf) will be saved to your computer.

Step 2.

2.1. Open the web interface of your Fritz!Box router in a browser (by default 192.168.178.1 or fritz.box).
2.2. On the welcome screen, enter your router password and click the Log In button.
2.3. In the left side menu of the FRITZ!OS interface, expand the Internet section and select the Permit Access subsection.
2.4. In the top panel of the opened section, go to the rightmost tab - VPN (WireGuard®).
2.5. In the block named "WireGuard® Connections between the FRITZ!Box and Other Devices", click the Add WireGuard® Connection button.
2.6. In the setup wizard that appears:

  • at the first stage "What kind of connection would you like to set up?", select the second option: Link networks and click the Next > button.
  • at the second stage "Has this WireGuard® connection already been set up at the remote connection?", select the Yes option and click the Next > button.
  • at the third stage "Name of the WireGuard® Connection", enter a name for your connection in the text field, for example "Xeovo" and click the Next > button.
  • at the fourth stage "Upload Configuration File", click the Select File button. Select the xeovo-no.conf file previously downloaded in step 1.7 and click the Next > button.
  • at the "Additional Connection Settings" stage, make sure the first checkbox is enabled: Send all IPv4 network traffic via the VPN connection. Click the Finish button.

2.7. The router will require additional verification. To pass it, briefly press any physical button on the router.
After pressing, the "Procedure confirmed" window will appear. Click the OK button.
Wait for the settings to be applied. When the "Settings Transferred" window appears, click the Exit button.
2.8. Now your VPN is working. To verify, visit the DoesMyVPN.work website.

Disconnecting VPN

In the router's web interface (by default 192.168.178.1 or fritz.box), go to the Internet -> Permit Access.
Disable checkbox next to your connection and click Apply button.
