On 21 May 2025, Vietnam’s Ministry of Information & Communications quietly instructed every internet and mobile provider to block Telegram and to confirm compliance by 2 June. Officials claim that almost 70% of local Telegram channels promote fraud, drugs or ‘anti-state’ content.
Independent watchdog NetBlocks, which tracks internet performance worldwide, spotted the impact almost immediately. Live telemetry on 30 May showed Telegram traffic dropping across major providers (Viettel & VNPT), confirming that Telegram is now blocked in Vietnam and the only way to access it is to use VPN or proxies.
